Threshold Theory
Baker (2004) demonstrates how the threshold theory can easily be used as an evaluation tool for the importance of cognitive development through various stages of bilingualism and bilingual education programs. A three-tier house helps depict the three floors of cognition and the two side ladders of the house simulate the success of the both languages for ELLs.
As educators, it is imperative to promote the most effective stage of the threshold theory to ensure all ELLs are given the same opportunity of learning academic content with high cognitive effects through additive bilingual programs that support the linguistic and cultural awareness of our diverse nation.
