MODULE 2: Cognitive Theories Important in Bilingual Education
Many cognitive theories have evolved around the acquisition of bilingualism and how an individual has the advantage or disadvantage to acquire a second language. In the United States, where English is the official language to educate students, demands all learners to develop proficiency in the language in order to become academically successful. However, educational settings with ELLs are not always providing the best research practices to help them develop their language which will facilitate the transferring of cognitive skills and aid the acquisition of the English through effective bilingualism or translanguaging (Garcia, 2009).
Ofelia Garcia talks to panel about the concept of translanguaging. Click on the video to learn more about how she depicts translanguaging and bilingualism.
